Scam Alert: Fake Advertising Packages

One recent scam involves a person calling and emailing to sell a supposed advertising package. In one case the package was allegedly to be displayed at American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars locations in Vermont. No such advertising package exists.

The CCB urges licensees to use caution when solicited by third parties requesting up-front payments. Other ways that cannabis businesses have been targeted include a caller posing as an electrical utility claiming a payment is due. In each case, scammers appear to have certain knowledge of the cannabis business, possibly obtained via their public website.

Fake Online Cannabis Retailers

Additionally, the CCB continues to get reports of fake cannabis establishments appearing on online maps and search results to scam the general public.

These fake retailers often include realistic menu options and pre-order functionality, directing customers to a location where no legitimate retailer exists.

These fake locations have appeared throughout the state in online directories, including Google Maps. If you encounter one online, please report it.

Members of the public can always verify that a cannabis retailer is licensed by checking the CCB website.
