Abu Nuren, 26 and of Rock Lane West, Rock Ferry, appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on Friday, September 26.

Nuren pleaded guilty to driving while over the limit for a controlled substance, namely THC.

Annika Livermore, prosecuting, told the court that shortly after 12.30am on Monday, July 14, officers driving behind a Fiat Punto in Liverpool Road, Chester, observed the car ‘slow down’ and ‘was allegedly swerving across the road’.

The car then made a ‘sharp turn in the direction of Rake Lane’ and was followed.

The officers then put on their siren and the defendant pulled over ‘after six or seven seconds’ and a roadside drug wipe tested positive for cannabis.

Nuren was arrested and taken into custody, a blood sample later showed he had 2.8 micrograms of THC per litre of blood in his system – the legal limit being 2 micrograms.

The court heard Nuren had no previous convictions.

The defendant, who was assisted by a Bengali interpreter, then spoke to magistrates, saying that he had not realised at the time that it was illegal to smoke cannabis and drive.

He added that it was ‘not normally’ an offence that was prosecuted ‘in my country’.
