Here at Cannabis Law Report this comes as awful news.

Peter was the only lawyer from a international law firm to take what we are doing seriously.

Not only did he aid us with financial sponsorship in our earlier days the only corporate law firm  (lawyer) to do so in the decade or so that cannabis law report has been publishing.

He would also  happily hop on a plane to speak at an event to do his best to explain the realities of what was happening in Germany and Europe with regard to cannabis regulation.

Most recently he was the only European lawyer to come down to our event in Johannesburg (June 2025) and support us.

Peter headed up life sciences at Dentons for many years and almost singlehandedly brought a gravitas in Germany to the understanding of cannabis and especially medical cannabis regulation. He was, I know, excited to carry on his work and build his practice at GunnerCooke.

Unlike many lawyers and especially lawyers from large corporate firms he was very self aware and had a rather wonderful dry humour that would always bring a wry smile. We could easily discuss across a gamut of topics and especially his love of 70’s/80’s German metal outfit the Scorpions!

Peter will be sorely missed here and more importantly  his passing, I believe, is a major set back to sensible cannabis regulation in Germany.

In a time where mis-information, overwrought political egos, dodgy business practices and a lack of credible cannabis lawyers polutes the political cannabis environment in Germany it is the few individuals like Peter that could have created something that actually worked. I sincerely doubt that there’s anybody who can step into his shoes foir sometime yet and that I suggest makes the German regulated cannabis market all the more precarious.

I send my best wishes and love to his family, friends and colleagues. They all know him much better than I and could add a lot more to this short eulogy.

In that vein i would like to put together an episode of the Karma Koala podcast of people talking about the work Peter has done in cannabis. Please do contact me at hocking.sean@gmail.com if you would like to add your thoughts.

Peter Homberg

This is the message we received this morning

Dear Sir or Madam,

It is with great sadness that we must inform you that our esteemed colleague and friend Peter Homberg unexpectedly passed away yesterday evening.

This news has deeply shaken us. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family in these difficult hours – especially to his wife and his son.

Peter achieved what only few can: He brought people together and kept them united. His positive spirit and passion will remain with us.

Over decades, he was an outstanding lawyer who dedicated himself wholeheartedly to his clients and felt at home in the life sciences sector like no other. To his clients, he was far more than just a lawyer – he was an expert, advisor, and reliable partner.

His commitment and his willingness to share knowledge have left a lasting mark on our team. Much of what defines our work today carries his signature. We are grateful to have shared part of his journey with him. Peter will be greatly missed.

At the same time, we would like to assure you that your continued support and representation remain fully ensured. The life sciences team that Peter Homberg built over many years is at your complete disposal. All ongoing mandates will be carried forward without interruption. For all matters concerning your mandates, please feel free to contact Judith Heimbürger (judith.heimbuerger@gunnercooke.de), Malte Goetz (malte.goetz@gunnercooke.de) or Corinna Ehrhardt (corinna.ehrhardt@gunnercooke.de).

We thank you for your sympathy and for the trust you place in us.

In quiet remembrance

Wolfgang Richter
