Police across several European countries have carried out a coordinated operation targeting an organised crime group accused of smuggling cocaine from South America to Europe, with Iceland identified as a key destination.

As reported by RÚV, a total of 24 people were arrested during the operation, according to Europol, including 11 suspects detained in Iceland. Arrests were also made in Lithuania (six), Spain (four), Belgium (two) and Denmark (one).

Investigators say the criminal network smuggled cocaine from South America to Iceland via Spain, concealing one-kilogram packages among legitimate goods in shipping containers.

Europol stated that the group used pack animals at certain stages of transport in an attempt to avoid detection and obscure the organisers’ identities.

The investigation was led by police in Iceland, Lithuania and Spain, with support from Eurojust. Authorities estimate the group generated drug sales worth around €4 million, equivalent to approximately ISK 600 million.

Police believe proceeds from the Icelandic drug trade were laundered through property purchases and other assets in Lithuania. The coordinated arrests followed an investigation lasting nearly a year.

In a statement, South Iceland Police confirmed that multiple locations were searched and that cash, electronic devices, payment cards and luxury watches were seized.

Officers are now analysing phones and other data believed to have been used in planning the offences.
