The West Virginia Treasury is set to finally distribute $38 million in medical cannabis tax revenue.
Full story after the jump.
West Virginiaās treasurerĀ indicatedĀ he will release $38 million in medical cannabisĀ derived funding, Mountain State Spotlight reports. The release of the fundsĀ comes after RepublicanĀ Gov. Patrick MorriseyĀ last week vetoed a bill that would haveĀ requiredĀ their distribution.
In the veto letter, Morrisey said the state āmust do better to plan for the future, and it canāt totally pre-commit future revenue streams like this if itās going to have reserves to invest more in roads, water, sewer, site selection, rail, and future tax cuts.ā
Treasurer Larry Pack said the funds will be disbursed according to the stateās medical cannabis law ā half will be used by the Office of Medical Cannabis, with theĀ remainderĀ split between a grant program for substance abuse treatment and grants for law enforcement.
Pack had originally expressed concerns over the state using the funds due to cannabisā federal designation as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act.Ā LarsĀ Dalseide,Ā a spokesmanĀ for the governorās office, told the Spotlight that the issueĀ wasnātĀ whether the funds should be used, rather āhow theyāre usedā and whether the state was using the funds āin a responsible, sustainable way.ā
