A campaign to change the medical cannabis laws in Arkansas has gained more signatures. The goal is to increase access to medical cannabis, ease patient certification, and allow home cultivation.

The full story is below the jump.

The campaign to change the medical cannabis industry in Arkansas submitted 38,933 additional signatures to the secretary’s of state office last week. Arkansas Advocate reports. The campaign submitted 108.512 signatures in July, of which 77,000 were checked by the Secretary of State John Thurston’s staff.

Arkansas for Patient Access required 90,704 signatures total from registered voters in order to get the issue onto the November ballots. State law gave them an additional 30 day period to collect additional signatures, because their initial submission had at least 75%.

The proposed constitutional amendment will allow pharmacists, physician assistants and nurse practitioners to certify patients to receive medical cannabis cards. It will also permit health care providers conduct patient assessments through telemedicine. Providers could also qualify patients based solely on their medical need, rather than the current 18 conditions.

The amendment would allow patients and designated caregivers over 21 to grow up to seven mature, seven immature and seven young cannabis plants. It would also eliminate the application fee for patient ID cards and extend the validity of the card by three years.

Arkansas for Patient Access released a statement in which it said that advocates “will work relentlessly until the polls close at the end of November 5th, to inform and educate voters.”

The news release stated that “we are confident they will enthusiastically support this amendment when they learn about the details.”
