WWhat can a German achieve that a Briton is unable to? What can a New Yorker do that a Chicagoan, San Franciscan, or Londoner cannot? What can Canadians do, but not Dutch, Portugueses, Chileans or Uruguayans? They can all legally smoke cannabis. In California, cannabis sommelier courses are now available. In Britain, they would be sent to jail.
In the early 1960s, Britons were proud of their social progress. In matters such as health care and sexuality, abortions, crime, and punishment, Britons considered themselves ahead of the curve. Now it is stumbling nervously behind.
I do not use illegal drugs. I am also not addicted to alcohol, nicotine or fatty food. I have served on two committees that deal with drugs and I am aware that narcotics can cause harm in varying degrees to their users, as well as to others. I could understand the argument for banning if, after half a decade of a “war on drugs”, banning had solved this problem or even reduced it. It hasn’t.

Nearly 8% of people use it occasionally Only 2% of people use hard drugs regularly. Far fewer use hard drugs. In many prisons more than half of the inmates regularly use drugs. For the sake of peace, authorities turn a deaf ear.

While other countries experimented, tested and piloted innovations, Britain shut down the debate. In 2009, when the government’s chief drug adviser, Prof David Nutt evaluated the relative harms of different narcotics He was fired.

We can understand why Keir starmer wouldn’t let him near the Home Office. Starmer’s approach towards penal reform seems to be “Build more prisons“.
If Britain were to move slowly towards drug reform, it could learn from other countries. When Texas, a state that still uses the death penalty, faced similar prison overcrowding as Britain, it responded by dividing drug offenses into special courts, prescribing treatment and rehabilitation. Reoffending rates dropped by 30%Since the first introduction of the scheme in 2007, the prison population has decreased by 15%.
