In a letter sent to Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), head Anne Milgram by Congressmen Jarrold Nadler, (D-NY), and Fran Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), they called for “swift actions” from the agency in order to move cannabis from Schedule I into Schedule III of federal Controlled Substances Act.

Nadler is the ranking member of the House Committee on the Judiciary. Pallone Jr. is the ranking member of the Chamber’s Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“We appreciate the Department of Justice’s unwavering commitment to preventing the misuse and diversion of drugs that pose a risk to public health. In the midst of a devastating overdose and opioid crisis, it’s imperative that law enforcement agencies and public health agencies concentrate their efforts on the greatest threats to Americans. Congress recognized that medical and scientific knowledge is constantly evolving when it passed the CSA. It granted the Attorney General of the United States and the Secretary to the Department of Health and Human Services the authority to make decisions on behalf of the public.
