OCEANSIDE (KGTV) – Two people accused of using a plane to smuggle illegal drugs were arrested when their plane ran out fuel and forced the pilot to land in an emergency on a California highway.

Fire crews received a radio message just before 2 a.m. on Thursday that a single engine airplane had landed in the middle a street along State Road 76, in Oceanside. Police say that the pilot of the Piper Cherokee made a distress call prior to making an emergency landing. The pilot and his passenger were not injured, as there was no traffic on ground.

When officers approached the 36-year old passenger, Troy Smith, they say he did something strange. Officers say he threw his backpack into the brush, where they found a kilogram of suspected cocaine.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the street value of a kilo cocaine is approximately $70,000.
