Arkansas officials said that the ballot initiative to expand Arkansas’ medical cannabis program fell more than 2,000 short of the signatures required to qualify for the November ballot.

The full story is below the jump.

The proposal to expand Arkansas’ medical cannabis program won’t qualify for the November ballot because supporters were short of more than 2,000 signed petitions, the Associated Press reports. Secretary of State John Thurston said on Monday that Arkansas for Patient Access collected 88.040 of 90.704 signatures required to put the issue before voters.

Arkansas for Patient Access plans to file a lawsuit against the decision. The group said that Thurston’s rejection was “arbitrary” and a last-minute rule change.

“The overwhelming support demonstrated through the petition process shows that Arkansans desire the opportunity to vote on expanding medical marijuana access.” Arkansans for Patient Access is committed to fighting for their right to vote on expanded medical marijuana access in November.

In July, the state informed the group that it had fallen short but that the proposal was still viable. You are entitled to an additional 30 days Circulate petitions

The ballot initiative aimed to allow registered patients grow medical cannabis at their homes, certify more health providers, including osteopathic physicians, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants to recommend patients for program, and to allow these health providers to recommend medical marijuana treatments to anyone who they believe would benefit from program. The initiative also allows out-of-state IDs for patients, increases the registration period from one year to 3 years, and eliminates application fees for patients.
