Research Project designed to validate breeding genes connected with fruity scent, a key patient preference trait and consumer trait, with positive impacts on future innovation
, /PRNewswire/ – Aurora Cannabis Inc.(NASDAQ:ACB) (TSX : ACB), the Canadian-based leading global medical marijuana company, announced today a research grant to be provided by Genome British Columbia. Genome BC is a non-profit organization that supports world-class genomics and innovation in British Columbia. The Genomics-enabled Aroma Breeding project will directly support Aurora’s genetics work. The project is led by Drs. Jose Celedon, Principal Geneticist, Breeding and Genetics, Aurora, and Joerg Böhlmann, Professor at UBC are working together to validate genetic and chemical markers that will allow cannabis to have a fruity aroma. This genetics research is in line with Aurora’s breeding objectives and will allow the company to improve its breeding program by focusing on traits that are important to consumers.
Dr. Jose Celedon is Director of Breeding and Genetics for Aurora. He said, “Through this research, Aurora will deepen its understanding of cannabis genetics and put a special focus on aromas. Aromas are a major driver of consumer preferences that directly impact the user experience.” By collaborating with UBC, we can fully execute the aroma research without the usual financial constraints. This allows us to continue working on other important breeding traits such as yield, potency, and disease resistance. We are eager to see how our work will impact the future of cannabis breeding.
Aroma is a distinctive characteristic of cannabis, and an important factor in consumer preference. Aurora, a cannabis genetic library leader in the world with one of its most advanced genetic libraries, will use this research to validate aroma markers and move beyond sensory analysis. Aurora has recently patented a set of genetic and chemcial markers for fruity scents, identified by its CanD diversity panels. Aurora will be able to validate these markers by using cutting-edge methods that would otherwise require significant funds. The data generated by this work will help to discover and launch cultivars that have unique and improved scents, along with high yields and potency.
Aurora’s contributions in kind to the project include conducting a sensory analysis of fruity smells and leading bioinformatics analyses using its own software. UBC’s contribution to the project, through Genome BC funding will include sequencing transcriptomes and analysing volatile chemistry. It will also involve functional characterization of genes responsible for fruity smells in cannabis. If this project is successful, the methods will be adapted to other aromas. This could strengthen Aurora’s intellectual property portfolio.
Aurora’s collaboration with UBC is a testament to its commitment to innovation and scientific progress in the cannabis industry. Aurora continues to push boundaries in cannabis research and development. They set new standards for quality and customer satisfaction.
