Officers from the National Police, in a joint operation with Portugalâs PolĂcia JudiciĂĄria and Europol, have dismantled the criminal organization known as the âSky Narcosâ, which aimed to smuggle tons of cocaine into Europe by air. The operation, resulting in the arrest of 25 individualsâ19 in Spain and 6 in Portugalâwas executed with a coordinated deployment of the National Police across the country.
The organization used chartered private jets and had numerous contacts for the dispatch and receipt of cocaine shipments. The criminal network was financed by Chinese entrepreneurs, known as âhawalersâ, who possessed sufficient economic resources and a global structure to conduct credit compensations outside the legal financial system. The investigation led to the seizure of 460 kilos of cocaine, a handgun, over 500,000 euros in cash, 18 vehicles, and 45 mobile devices, most of which were encrypted. Additionally, 8 properties valued at over 1.65 million euros and 80 bank accounts with a balance of 660,000 euros were frozen.
Initial investigations, which began in June 2023 jointly by the National Police and the US DEA, focused on the activities of a Colombian national residing in Madrid, who allegedly led a significant criminal organization dedicated to importing large quantities of cocaine. In the early phase, the investigation centered on a cafĂŠ in La Moraleja (Madrid) frequented by the suspects, referred to by them as âthe officeâ. Most of the organizationâs meetings were held there.
From that point, police efforts began to identify members of the networkâmany residing abroadâand understand the role each played, as well as uncover the illicit projects being developed.
High Specialisation
As the investigation progressed, agents confirmed that it was a highly specialized criminal organization in smuggling cocaine shipments into Europe. Its members had numerous contacts for dispatching the drug from various points in South America and receiving it in different European cities. They used private jets chartered by private companies, giving the illicit activity a legal appearance.
The organization had access to several European airports as entry points for cocaine shipments, one of which was in the Portuguese town of Beja. There, the network had a substantial structure, prompting its members to make numerous trips to Portugal.
In January, the National Police and Portugalâs PolĂcia JudiciĂĄria conducted a joint operation that uncovered a network of corrupt officials operating under the direction of a Portuguese citizen at Bejaâs commercial airport. During this period, agents learned that the organization had launched its first chartered flight from Barranquilla (Colombia) to Beja (Portugal), carrying several members and hired pilots. However, despite the extensive police operation, it was confirmed that the plan could not be loaded with cocaine in Barranquilla, resulting in financial losses exceeding 500,000 euros for the organization.
The suspects continued their plan to send nearly two tonnes of cocaine by private jet to Europe, although they changed their modus operandi. They began sending suitcases with cocaine from various countries to Adolfo SuĂĄrez Madrid-Barajas Airport. However, the shipments were detected by agents who intercepted four of them in September 2023 (16.5 kilos of cocaine), March 2024 (31 kilos of cocaine), April 2024 (60 kilos of cocaine), and September 2024 (20 kilos of the drug ).
Additionally, last May, the organization sent a container of avocados from Peru to the Port of Barcelona. This time it contained 344 kilos of cocaine hidden in the structureâs floor, but agents intercepted it before it reached the networkâs members.
In June 2024, the suspects made a second attempt to transport the drugs on a private jet. After securing funding from several external investors from Mexico, they chartered a private aircraft from Johannesburg (South Africa) to the Dominican Republic, where the drug was to be loaded, before finally heading to the United Kingdom. As with the first attempt, logistical issues prevented the cocaine from being loaded.
Financial Support through Chinese âHawalersâ
The setbacks forced the suspects to seek new funding sources to cover their daily expenses, as well as the payment for the drugs and other logistical costs.
As a result of police efforts, agents identified several avenues supporting the organizationâs logistical and financial apparatus. Among them, they confirmed the use of establishments dealing in cryptocurrencies to convert cash from drug trafficking operations into legal currency. They also evidenced the use of money remittance businesses and, as a primary source, contact with Chinese entrepreneurs who had sufficient economic capacity and a global structure to conduct credit compensations outside the legal financial system (known as the Hawala system).
