The quantities of medical cannabis imported into Germany continue to rise rapidly. According to the BfArM, German importers and wholesalers imported 20.1 tonnes in the third quarter alone. In the first quarter – when medical cannabis was still classified as a narcotic – the quantity was 8.1 tonnes. A total of almost 40 tonnes were imported in 2024. Already significantly more than in the whole of the previous year.

Even compared to the second quarter (11.6 tons) – the first after the MedCanG came into force – the amount in the third quarter almost doubled. How much more domestic producers are adding has not been known since April 1st. All three previous BfArM producers had announced that they would be expanding their production capacity in Germany. In addition, the BfArM has not published the quantities delivered to pharmacies since April 1st due to the drug being removed from the narcotics catalog.

For the whole of 2023, the volume was still 31.4 tonnes. If import volumes remain stable or continue to rise in the fourth quarter, imports would double compared to the previous year.
