Authorities in Finland are investigating a suspected group responsible for smuggling nearly 100 kilograms of cannabis into the country, according to a recent statement by Finnish Customs.
The investigation began in October when Customs officers noticed a man arriving at Helsinki Airport from Bangkok with a suspicious suitcase. This prompted the agency’s analysis and intelligence unit to monitor the individual closely. The surveillance led to the Espoo area, where the man met with another associate.
Upon inspecting the suitcase, Customs officers discovered 13 kilograms of cannabis, resulting in the immediate detention of both men involved.
Following this initial incident, authorities expanded their investigation and uncovered a larger smuggling operation. A subsequent search of a warehouse in Espoo uncovered an additional 60 kilograms of cannabis hidden in biscuit boxes, and investigators found indications that another 30 kilograms were also stored at the facility. Authorities suspect that the group distributed the cannabis for sale in southern Finland.
As part of their operation, Finnish Customs arrested three individuals connected to the scheme. Notably, none of the suspects reside in Finland, highlighting the international dimensions of the case.
The investigation has recently concluded, and Customs has submitted a report to the prosecutor for consideration of charges.
Additionally, Finnish Customs announced that seizures of cannabis are on track to reach record levels this year, with approximately 830 kilograms confiscated during the first nine months alone. This figure nearly doubles the total amount seized throughout 2023, underscoring the agency’s intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
