This year the Chronicle of Higher Ed touted the complete disruption of education as we now know it and the rise of AI University. The train has left the station and those still on the platform are mostly professors whose jobs are at risk. Deloitte recently released a report on the state of higher education in the US. Trends indicate – a lack of faith that the degree will mean gainful employment. With a large focus on enterprise risk management the report does identify an erosion in the value of a four-year degree. This is alleviated by shorter certificates and work-based learning.
The Deloitte report also highlights AI use and the digital divide. The California community college system is the largest in the nation. 70% of those students are of diverse ethnic backgrounds which does not necessarily mean at a socio-economic disadvantage. Having said that, community college is affordable, and the Deloitte report cites that four-year degrees only make sense to most people if students do not take out loans. Furthermore, the destruction/disruption caused by AI use and the rise of AI University requires student users to have the technology available to them to access that learning.
The use of AI is only possible if the user has access to the device needed. Laptop loans, food insecurity, housing insecurity, and a student mental health crisis that is not diminishing all reduce student purchasing power. This is through job insecurity, caretaking responsibility and in California an intractable housing crisis.
AI should disrupt education. While it is at it, let’s find a way for it to solve all the other problems students face regardless of their access to a laptop, smart phone, desktop, iPad, or internet café.
