A plot to import cocaine from Switzerland inside car tyres by a married couple in Australia has led to hefty jail sentences.
A 52-year-old woman and her 60-year-old husband were sentenced to up to nine years in prison each, with a non-parole period of four and a half years, in Perth District Court on July 17.
Investigators had been closely watching the couple from Nollamara, WA, after Border Force officers discovered the attempted importation of cocaine inside car tyres in 2022.
Police executed a complex operation to track the shipment and arrest the couple, as well as a father and son from Sydney.
AFP acting Superintendent Chris Colley said the cocaine could have been sold as 280,000 individual street deals, putting $18.2 million in the pockets of criminals.
“Anyone involved in the illicit drug trade – whether they’re funding and organising the importations, or moving drugs or money – contribute to the harm and exploitation of the community,” he said.
Cocaine sting
An investigation was launched into the drug importation attempt after Border Force officers in Perth found packages of white powder stuffed behind the rims of four new car wheels imported via air cargo in June 2022.
In 56 packages, police found 37.67 kilograms of pure cocaine.
Investigators hatched a plan to replace the cocaine with an inert substance and to allow the delivery to continue to its destination, with police keeping a close eye on the packages.
