California Lawmakers Approve Cannabis Lounges Bill (Bill 19459000)

California lawmakers have passed legislation to legalize cannabis consumption in the state. The proposal will now be sent to the governor. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, vetoed the same measure last year due to concerns that it would violate the state’s smoke free workplace protections.

California lawmakers passed a bill on Tuesday that would allow the state to a Bill Legalize cannabis consumption lounges throughout the state. The measure is now on the desk of Governor. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who was governor last year vetoed A similar proposal was made over concerns that consumption lounges could “undermine California’s longstanding smoke-free workplace laws.”

In a statement released last week, Assemblymember Matt Haney, who sponsored both the consumption lounge bill that was vetoed and the version passed this week by the Governor, said that the most recent version of the Bill includes protections for workers against the effects of secondhand smoking.

“Many people want to use legal cannabis with others. Many people want to enjoy cannabis while drinking coffee, eating a biscuit, or listening music. There is no reason for the state to make this illegal from an economic, safety or health standpoint. We should stop holding back small businesses and allow cities to allow an authorized cannabis retail shop to sell a coffee and sandwich. Press release

According to Ben Allen (D), co-author of the bill, the version of the bill that will be sent to the governor would also allow consumption lounges serve fresh food instead only pre-packaged or food from delivery services.

Allen said that he was pleased to see several safety provisions added to the bill recently to protect both workers as well as patrons.

Several municipalities within the state have already allowed cannabis consumption lounges. These include Cathedral City, Coalinga. Coachella, Cotati. Emeryville. Eureka. Lemoore. Lompoc. National City. Needles. Oakland. Ojai. Palm Springs. Port Hueneme. Sacramento. San Francisco. South Lake Tahoe. Ukiah. Weed.
