Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday that California authorities have seized nearly $23 million worth of illegal cannabis in East Oakland.

During the operation, law enforcement agents confiscated more than 21,000 illegal cannabis plants valued at $17.8 million, along with more than 3,000 pounds of illicit cannabis flower worth more than $5 million. Additionally, authorities seized over $10,000 in cash.

ā€œThe recent operations in East Oakland are a further proof point of Californiaā€™s dedication to protect consumers and legal cannabis growers while holding those who attempt to undermine the stateā€™s cannabis market accountable,ā€ Newsom said in a statement.

While authorities kept specific details about the operation under wraps, the governorā€™s office noted that the task force has made significant progress since its inception.

To date, it has seized more than 162 tons of illegal cannabis, valued at approximately $536 million, and eradicated over half a million illegal plants. The task force has also arrested dozens of individuals involved in these operations.

Nathaniel Arnold, chief of law enforcement at CDFW, emphasized that the task forceā€™s efforts are not only focused on consumer safety but also on protecting Californiaā€™s environment.

ā€œAs shown by the amounts seized in these search warrants, these large-scale illegal operations are a burden on Californiaā€™s valuable environmental resources and need to be removed,ā€ he said in a statement.

Last month, the task force seized nearly $20 million worth of illegal cannabis in separate operations in Oakland and Hayward.
