‘I’m surprised police would let you operate for more than a day before police and bylaw officers show up and shut you down,’ says insurance expert

A magic mushroom store in downtown Barrie, which was damaged by a firebombing incident in April, has again opened its doors for business, despite the fact it’s operating illegally.

The early-morning blaze on April 23 damaged the inside of Shroomyz, located at 66 Dunlop St. W., adjacent to Mary Street.

Police have said there was a broken ground-floor window on the Mary Street side of the building, and an incendiary device or substance that was tossed inside the building. The business then caught fire. No injuries were reported.

The same business was the focus of an investigation after an SUV crashed through the front window of its previous location at 15 Dunlop St. W., near the Five Points, in 2023. A single suspect is also wanted in that incident.

A BarrieToday reporter visited the shop, which is now repaired but with a strong smell of acrid smoke still hanging in the air.

Sitting behind a counter is a man named Paul, who manages the shop.

He shrugs his shoulders when asked if he knows who may be responsible for the attacks.

“I wish I knew,” he said.

He said police confiscated all of the store’s stock of magic mushroom products after the firebombing.

“They kind of had to, really,” Paul said about the officers inside his shop investigating the attack.

According to the federal government, “magic mushrooms” are mushrooms that contain hallucinogens — usually psilocybin and psilocin.

“Taking magic mushrooms may cause you to see, hear or feel things that are not there, or to experience anxiety, fear, nausea and muscle twitches accompanied by increased heart rate and blood pressure,” according to the government. “In some cases, the consumption of magic mushrooms can lead to ‘bad trips’ or ‘flashbacks.’”

The production, sale and possession of magic mushrooms is illegal in Canada.

The government also notes there is “increasing interest in the potential therapeutic uses” of magic mushrooms and of psilocybin.
