A Co. Down farm today admitted to involvement in a massive marijuana factory discovered on his land, as well as laundering thousands of pounds.

Clive Weir, 56, was re-arraigned in the dock at Craigavon Crown Court on three of four charges brought against him. All of these crimes were committed between 14 January and 2 February 2023.

Weir from New Road, Hillsborough, confessed offences including cultivating cannabis, converting criminal property, and using criminal property.

The charges state that Weir converted criminal property into funds by depositing PS41,495 in a Bank of Ireland bank account and PS132,571.50 in a Clear Bank account.

After Weir’s admissions the prosecution counsel Ian Tannahill requested that Judge Donna McColgan KC mark as “left in the books” a 2nd offence of converting illegal property. She so ordered.

Michael Chambers, the defence KC, revealed that Weir complained to the media about the length of time it took the police to investigate the case. “His gain was approximately PS42,000,” he said, while the prosecution claims his profit to be around PS100,000.

The senior barrister said that the client did not accept the amount of PS100,000. He also admitted that the court might need to conduct a Newton Hearing.

A Newtown hearing occurs when a defendant admits their guilt, but not the full extent criminality alleged by PPS. Each side must call evidence and possibly witnesses for a court to decide where criminality lies.

Mr Chambers informed Judge McColgan that if a Newton hearing was held, he would call “not only the defendant, but also his accountant and other witnesses.”

Mr Tannahill emphasized that the final figure of Weir’s criminal proceeds and money laundering may not have a material impact on the sentence, as “the headline crime is cannabis cultivation.”
