Introduction. In 2017, the use of medical marijuana became legal in Mexico. In June 2021 the Supreme Court decriminalized marijuana use by adults 18 years and older. This includes personal marijuana use as well as its cultivation, harvesting, preparation, possession and transportation. Objectives. 1) To determine which variables best predict support for medical and recreational marijuana use and legalization among marijuana users. Method. The data are taken from the 2016 National Survey on Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use, which was administered to a national representative sample of Mexican homes. A validated questionnaire with questions about demographic characteristics, marijuana usage (including the number used), respondents’ opinions on the legalization of cannabis and recreational use, if they were offered marijuana for free, perceptions of risk associated with marijuana consumption, and excessive alcohol use was used. Results. The variables most strongly associated with approval of medical and recreational marijuana use and its legalization are being male and having a low perceived risk of marijuana use, regardless of whether respondents use it. Age, education, and income are also variables that are associated with approval. Discussion and conclusion. Legislators should incorporate the views of the public on marijuana use and legalization into their proposals.
