Connecticut has joined many of its peers and established a new state agency devoted solely to regulating and overseeing its marijuana industry.

The new office, which has yet to be formally named, will still be housed within the state Department of Consumer Protection, but will be set apart from another wing of the DCP, the Drug Control Division, the CT Mirror reported.

The move came after officials at the Drug Control Division were accused of conducting a “retaliatory inspection” against a licensed cannabis grow, the Mirror reported.

The new agency will take on all state government responsibilities regarding the fledgling recreational marijuana industry and its more mature medical cousin, including all licensing, regulatory and inspection functions, and will be led by DCP attorney Lila McKinley.

“For nearly a year, we have contemplated organizational changes that would allow for more specialized attention to your complex and growing industry,” a DCP email to cannabis licensees on Wednesday read. “This change reflects your evolving industry as we are restructuring to better meet your regulatory needs.”

Commissioner of Consumer Protection Bryan Cafferelli said in a statement to the Mirror that the reorganization “has been in the works for nearly a year,” and became a necessity as the industry boomed from its formerly small medical sales to hundreds of millions in sales per year.

Fine Fettle executive Ben Zachs told the Mirror he believes the development is a positive one for the industry, given the growing size of the cannabis industry in Connecticut.

“We’ve worked with Lila for years now. I’ve always found her to be thoughtful and open-minded,” Zachs told the Mirror.
