CLEVELAND (Ohio) — The sale and use of recreational marijuana in Ohio is now one step closer.

On Friday, medical marijuana centers can begin applying for dual licensing.

This would allow them to sell the substance and prescribe it under the same roof.

These applications are only available to the 130 licensed medical marijuana users in California.

Officials say that there is no timetable for the sale of recreational marijuana.

Experts say it could take a few months or even a few weeks.

The Division of Cannabis Control reviews and processes these applications as soon as they are submitted by medical marijuana dispensaries.

Experts expect the turnaround time to be much quicker, since they already have a prior license for medical sale.

After an inspection and detailed review, the Division of Cannabis Control of the state will determine who receives a dual license.

Once approved, the facility can sell to people 21 years and older.

Local facilities are prepared for a surge of customers.

“We expect to be dealing with two or three million adult users almost overnight here in the next few weeks,” Pete Nischt said, Vice President of Compliance and Communications at Klutch Cannabis.

Distributors say that they are working on the process to accommodate the increased number of users and will continue prioritizing those with critical medical requirements.

Nischt said, “We’re going to try our best as an industry to ensure that patients are accommodated. The division of Cannabis Control mandates that these things take place.”

After all is said, applicants will be subjected to detailed inspections and thorough reviews of their facilities in order to establish ground rules for medical and adult-use sales.

This could include hiring more staff, creating separate lines to serve customers and patients, changing their point-of service systems, and ensuring that there is a sufficient supply of products.

“All of our facilities are ready as soon we receive a certificate of operations,” Nischt said.

News 5 will continue to monitor the dual license process.
