This new facility, the first of its kind in the country, marks a notable milestone in the global movement towards sustainable and innovative uses of hemp in a historically very hard country with this plant and its users.
A centre for collaboration and progress
Le Hemp Science Center it was designed to stimulate research and industrial applications of hempfocusing on areas such as natural fibers, the advanced materials, well-being and sustainable agricultural practices.
It will play the role of’a collaborative centre bringing together academics, business leaders and policy makers. The creation of the center coincided with the signature of’un ’accord protocol between the’University of Cyberjaya and the Malaysia Hemptech Industrial Research Association (MHIRA)cementing a partnership to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the industrial hemp sector.
Johan Mohamad, founder and president of MHIRA, s’has been shown optimistic about the future of hemp in Malaysia, pointing out that the collaboration with’ University represents a significant advance for the country’s hemp’ industry.
« This initiative consolidates Malaysia’s role as a hub of’innovation and sustainability in the global hemp market », Mohamad said in a statement reported by Hemp Build Magazine, present at the’inauguration.
Main conclusions of the 2nd forum on industrial hemp
Le second forum on industrial hemp, which is held at the Grand Hall of the’ University of Cyberjaya, brought together policy makers, experts from the’industry, researchers, students and hemp advocates.
On the theme « Modern hemp in life sciences », the forum gave rise to various presentations exploring the sustainable and innovative potential of hemp. Among the strong points:
- Modern hemp in life sciences and HSC initiatives
Presented by Associate Professor Piakong Mohd Tuah, this session traced thehemp history and put the’ emphasis on its economic and environmental potential. Mr. Tuah urged stakeholders to adopt hemp as a sustainable resource for the future. - ESG : Potential of natural fibres in the’advanced materials industry
Professor Sarani Zakaria highlighted the environmental benefits of natural fibres, including hemp, and their applications in advanced materials. - Potential benefits of medical cannabis
Professor Sathappan Subramaniam, vice-dean of the medical faculty of’ University of Cyberjaya, spoke about the therapeutic possibilities of medical cannabis. - The role of hemp in the circular’ economy
Paul Iglesia, Global Hemp Service, explained how hemp can contribute to sustainability and’innovation, thereby strengthening Malaysia’s interest in hemp research.
The forum also highlighted l’a progressive approach from Malaysia to meet challenges such as the restoration of the’environment, sustainable development and economic growth. The previous forum, held in November 2019 at’International Islamic University of Kuala Lumpur, had laid the groundwork for the integration of hemp into the world Objectives of sustainable development 2030 .
The delay in the following events due to the pandemic has forced stakeholders to extend their momentum to revive this crucial conversation in 2024.
