The community interested in planting hemp and cannabis in Ghana is challenging the new licensing regime proposed by the government for the cultivation of industrial hemp and medicinal cannabis, claiming that the proposed fees are excessively high and could make the market inaccessible to local producers and investors. The minimum fee starts at $9,000 for cultivating 0.4 hectares and could reach $45,000 per hectare, Cannabiz Africa reported.

According to Cannabiz Africa, the Ghanaian hemp activist organization, Hempire Agric Ghana (HAG), states that the proposed licensing fees, recently presented to Parliament, are “unrealistic and exclusionary.” HAG is now seeking a meeting with the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, to discuss the way forward for the implementation of the hemp industry in Ghana, a sector that has long been delayed.
