Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed a bill creating a cannabis research program for the University of Mississippi. The program will investigate the safety, effectiveness, and therapeutic benefits of cannabis.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican, signed a bill Tuesday that established the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Research Program. The program examines the safety, efficacy and potential therapeutic benefits. Medical cannabis The funding will be used to support patients with a variety of medical conditions. It will also provide resources for researchers at the Ole Miss Pharmacy School to conduct scientific research and explore new avenues in medical cannabis education and research.

In a StatementRobert Welch is the director of the National Center for Cannabis Research and Education at the University. He said that the program’s creation “represents an incredible opportunity to advance scientific understanding, improve patient care, and enhance the well-being for individuals in our state and nation.”

The NCCRE is dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding and education of the field of Cannabis research.

One of the bill’s sponsors, State Sen. Nicole Boyd(R), added that the NCCRE will “help to ensure that Mississippi stays at the forefront of research on natural products.”

Ole Miss launched The NCCRE was established in January. The National Institute on Drug Abuse Drug Supply Program granted the University of Mississippi the exclusive federal license for cannabis cultivation for more than 50 year through the National Institute on Drug Abuse Drug Supply Program.
