A joint security operation carried out by national security forces and customs officials at the El Guerguerat border crossing, south of Dakhla, successfully foiled an international drug smuggling attempt on Saturday, May 17, resulting in the seizure of three tons of hashish.

The border control and inspection procedures, which included the use of police-trained sniffer dogs, led to the discovery of the drugs concealed within a shipment of artificial marble loaded onto a truck bearing Moroccan license plates. The vehicle was en route to a sub-Saharan African country. The driver and the shipment’s owner, aged 53 and 43 respectively, were arrested.

A judicial investigation has been launched under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine the full circumstances of the case, identify all individuals involved, and trace the national, regional, and international ramifications of these criminal activities.

This joint operation is part of the ongoing and intensified efforts by Morocco’s security services at the El Guerguerat border crossing to combat international drug and psychotropic substance trafficking, and to detect and prevent all forms of cross-border crime.
