TOMS RIVER – A 60-year-old Lacey woman has admitted that while caring for three children she also ran a magic mushroom factory at her Elwood Street home, recruiting one of the children to assist her work, said Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Margaret Whalen pleaded guilty before state Superior Court Judge Dina M. Vicari on Monday to psilocybin mushroom possession with intent to distribute, employing a juvenile in a drug distribution scheme and endangering the welfare of a child.
Whalen is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 10, at which time the Prosecutor’s Office will recommend a total sentence of 14 years in state prison, with the expectation she will be released after about five years or less as part of a plea agreement. The deal reached between the parties amounts to concurrent sentences of four years for possession with intent to distribute; five years for employing a juvenile in a drug distribution scheme and five years for endangering the welfare of a child, the Prosecutor’s Office said.
