The Ohio marijuana market recorded just under $320 million in sales in the six months of recreational sales that began in August 2024, according to new state figures released this week.
The 131 licensed recreational cannabis dispensaries in the state sold a grand total of $319.5 million between Aug. 6 last year and Feb. 8, the state Division of Cannabis Control reported.
The sales included 4.3 million total transactions were completed and 5.3 million units of manufactured cannabis goods were sold in that timeframe, with a total of 45,184 pounds of cannabis.
Medical marijuana sales also continued, with total sales reaching more than $2 billion since medical dispensaries opened their doors in 2019, and the state boasts 448,301 registered patients. Total marijuana sales in the state have passed the $2.4 billion mark, according to DCC statistics.
The Ohio cannabis market is currently comprised of 37 growers, 46 processors, and nine testing labs in addition to the 131 retailers.
The fledgling industry could be headed for troubled waters, however, with Gov. Mike DeWine throwing his political clout behind a proposed cannabis tax increase to 20% from 10% to fund more state services. That has some in the Ohio industry worried that government officials are going to scare their customers away with artificially high prices, despite the fact that marijuana flower is more than twice as expensive as in nearby Michigan, WBNS reported.
