Rhode Island Cannabis Office Officially Established: Streamlining Regulation and Oversight for a Growing Industry
WARWICK, R.I. — The Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) is proud to announce the official establishment of the Rhode Island Cannabis Office, a key milestone in the state’s efforts to strengthen oversight, increase efficiency, and improve services across the legal cannabis industry.
The creation of the Cannabis Office marks a structural transition designed to streamline regulatory functions and better serve stakeholders, including license holders, municipalities, and members of the public. With this reorganization now finalized, all regulatory responsibilities previously housed within the Office of Cannabis Regulation at the Department of Business Regulation have been formally consolidated under the Cannabis Office, operating under the purview of the CCC.
“This is a critical step forward in delivering on our mission to ensure a safe, transparent, and equitable cannabis market in Rhode Island,” said Commission Chair Kim Ahern. “The Cannabis Office is designed to provide clear lines of communication, licensee support, and an accountable regulatory framework.”
The Cannabis Office will oversee all licensing, compliance, and enforcement activities related to medical and adult-use cannabis. Key functions of the newly established Cannabis Office include:
- Monitoring and enforcement of state cannabis laws and regulations
- Supporting social equity applicants and disproportionately impacted communities
- Providing technical assistance and stakeholder education
- Coordinating municipal engagement and public transparency
Additionally, the Cannabis Office operates with a commitment to nine core priorities that guide its work:
- Operational Efficiency: Streamlining processes to reduce burdens and improve service delivery.
- Accountability: Promoting transparency and responsibility to build public trust.
- Legislative Adaptability: Remaining proactive and responsive to evolving laws.
- Public Health & Promotion: Enforcing safety standards and educating on responsible cannabis use.
- Industry Support: Offering guidance and tools for a thriving, compliant industry.
- Social Equity & Inclusion: Advancing fairness and access for impacted communities.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring consistent, lawful oversight.
- Data-Driven Decisions: Using analytics to guide policies and operations.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement: Embracing new ideas to improve regulation and industry growth.
“The establishment of this office is about more than just organizational charts, it’s about delivering real improvements in how we support license holders, patients, consumers, and the public,” said Michelle Reddish, Cannabis Office Administrator. “Our focus is on being proactive, accessible, and responsive.”
