The former Athletic player Jesús Emilio Díez de Mier, known as Txutxi, has been arrested by the National Police in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz). The ex-footballer from Biscay had been evading justice since 2015 when he was sentenced by the National Court as part of Operation ‘Ciclón’ for trafficking 950 kilograms of cocaine.

Txutxi was apprehended on December 15 during a routine road check. Officers became suspicious immediately when they detected that the information he provided was false. Upon being taken to police facilities, his true identity was uncovered, and he was subsequently incarcerated to serve his sentence.

Officials then concluded that he was Jesús Emilio Díez de Mier, Txutxi, sentenced to nine years in prison in 2014 for smuggling 950 kilograms of cocaine into Spain. According to the ruling issued by the National Court and later upheld by the Supreme Court a year later, the detainee was part of a criminal organization that included other former professional footballers.

They were found guilty of smuggling two containers from Argentina through the ports of Algeciras and Valencia that contained the cocaine. The seized drugs were estimated to have a value exceeding 32 million euros on the black market, as determined by the courts at the time. Among those convicted in that trial was Pedrag Stankovic, a former footballer who played for Hércules.

Txutxi, a 51-year-old from Santurce, trained at the Athletic academy and made his first-team debut during the 1992-93 season. He played his first match at Xerez in the Copa under Jupp Heynckes (1-0). In the 1995-96 season, under coach Dragoslav Stepanovic, he made it to La Liga, appearing in thirteen matches and scoring his only goal at Alavés in the Copa. After departing from Lezama, he played for Lleida (1996-97, Segunda A), Badajoz (1997-02, Segunda A), Hércules (2002-03, Segunda B), Yeclano (2003-04, Segunda B), and Sangorera (2004-05, Tercera), where he eventually retired.
