Two English tourists in Dublin for a weekend were arrested after they tried to sell suspected cocaine to a garda, then fled a drugs search, a court heard.
Max Lucas (22) and James Skirpek (22) had offered the garda wraps of “white powder” that they took from their socks, then ran when they realised who he was.
A judge fined the accused €350 each.
Lucas, of Lavinia Court, Chellaston, and Skirpek of Lark Hill, Mickleover, both in Derby, pleaded guilty to obstructing a garda drugs search on O’Connell Bridge.
Lucas also admitted trespassing at a property on O’Connell Street.
No drugs were found and neither accused was charged with possession or dealing.
The court heard Lucas approached a garda on September 22 and offered to sell him cocaine. He removed a wrap from his sock which contained a white powder that he said was cocaine.
When the garda went to arrest him, a struggle ensued and Lucas attempted to flee.
As he ran off, he managed to dispose of the evidence.
Lucas was an apprentice service engineer and was in Dublin on holiday, his lawyer said.
The incident was alcohol-fuelled and when he realised it was a garda, he panicked and fled the scene.
“It was down to drink, he’s very apologetic and wants to get on with his life,” the lawyer said.
The judge said it appeared the accused was “in possession of a controlled substance and discarded it”. He had approached a serving member of the gardaí, offered to sell this to him, then escaped lawful custody, the judge said.
“He accepts what he did was wrong,” the lawyer said.
“He was over here for a weekend, it was a silly act.”
The court then heard Skirpek was also offering to sell the garda cocaine and the evidence in his case was the same. He also removed a wrap from his sock, the court heard.
Skirpek was very apologetic and “very upset”, the lawyer said. Both accused had spent a night in custody after their arrest, and had never been in court before.
Neither had any previous convictions.
The judge said the accused were tourists and it was “unacceptable behaviour for visitors to our country”.
