Lakewood City Council has placed a temporary prohibition on pot shops, nearly a month since voters approved Issue 2 to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
LAKEWOOD, Ohio – Nearly a month after the voters approved Issue 2 legalizing recreational marijuana, the Lakewood City Council has placed a temporary prohibition on pot shops.
Council President John Litten said, “We want to make sure we get our ducks lined up as a city.” “We want to ensure that we have the proper safeguards in place in order to protect everyone in our city.”
In 2016, Council President John Litten stated that the city passed a prohibition when medical marijuana became legal.
“We needed to buy ourselves some more time so that we can work out the logistics for how it would work in the City of Lakewood,” said Litten.
When News 5’s Remi murrey spoke with a resident who was in favor of legalizing marijuana here in Lakewood they told News 5 that they hope the moratorium does not last too long as they know some people chose it because of its convenience.
“If people do not have insurance, they cannot get a doctor prescribe the conditions they need to get medical marijuana, if other medications don’t work for them. If they are unable to leave the city because of their disabilities, they will not be able to profit from this,” said Lakewood resident Elliot Lowry.
Litten has made it clear that they do not want to delay the process.
He said he is not sure when the state’s tweaks to the laws will be finalized.
Lowry said that if the fog lifts eventually, we will have it here eventually, but it only extends the timeline.
“I think Lakewood has a lot of businesses that want to be part of it, so I think the majority of good businesses will wait to make sure this is done right in terms of a law or an ordinance,” said Litten.
