Human rights groups in Egypt and internationally have expressed grave concern for the lives of hundreds prisoners in Saudi Arabia who face execution on drug-related charges. This includes 33 Egyptians in Tabuk Prison. Since the beginning of 2024 there has been an increase in the number death sentences, along with disturbing information from the prisons.

According to information available to organisations, there is a feeling of anxiety and fear among those in Tabuk Prison. Death sentence Most of the Egyptians who are charged with drug-related crimes are Egyptians.

The organisations In a statement released on Thursday evening, it was stated: “Eight men were already executed for drug-related offenses in Tabuk this past year, and 42 across the country, including three Egyptians.”

The statement noted that “although there is no transparency regarding the Saudi authorities’ handling executions, independent surveillance of some cases confirmed a pattern abuses suffered by a number of the condemned men during their arrest and trial.” The Egyptian consulate and embassy played no role in the case, the defendants were not allowed to defend themselves, they were not appointed a lawyer, and their complaints in court were not taken seriously.

It added: “Accordingly to statements published by Ministry of Interior, individuals executed for drugs charges in 2024 have so far been of the following nationalities, Saudi, Egyptians, Syrians, Jordanians, Pakistanis, Afghans, Ethiopians, Sudaneses, Yemenis and Nigerians.”

The organisations noted that: “There are not official figures on the number of people who have been sentenced to die in Saudi Arabia. However, there are indications that there are hundreds in Saudi prisons of different nationalities who have been convicted of drugs-related crimes.” The lack of transparency in the official treatment of these cases, lack of justice, lack of confidence in judicial system and fear of reprisals make it impossible for those who have been convicted to express the pain they are experiencing.
