Documents reveal how a weed arrest was an unexpected catalyst for a sex trafficking investigation—and how attorneys cited pot use to smear a key victim

With this latest release of what the Department of Justice is generously labeling “3.5 Million Responsive Pages in Compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act,” there’s no end to the new revelations about wealthy deviants and their enablers. As many critics and reporters have already noted, there are plenty of ridiculous redactions, but there’s still a lot of juice to squeeze out of the documents.

Staying in our wheelhouse, we looked into where and how cannabis played into affairs. Specifically, since Epstein was a Palm Beach-based investor in addition to a human trafficker, we started by scanning the files for the names of marijuana companies that have Florida footprints. But what we found was something different …

A revealing 2005 marijuana arrest

As it turns out, a lot of what we know about Epstein stems from a 2005 marijuana arrest on Palm Beach Island. That Sept. 11, police “observed a four door white Mitsubishi … parked in a safety zone along a curve in the roadway. … Upon approaching the auto, [cops] observed five occupants inside the car, several having bloodshot eyes [and] detected an odor of marijuana from inside the auto along with observing the occupants appeared very nervous.”

A search of the vehicle led to two arrests. The pair was charged with possession of marijuana under 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia, and in a subsequent interview the female perp “explained she had been going to Epstein’s house since 2002, when she was sixteen years of age.” The police report continues: “Since then she has gone to the house hundreds of times [and] stated she became his ‘number one girl.’” From there, it gets extremely dark.

As authorities built their case in Florida using that as well as testimony from other victims, Epstein’s attorneys argued that the girl who had been caught with weed told Epstein that she was 18 so that she could have consensual sex with him, and smeared her for her pot use. Lawyers at Kirkland & Ellis wrote: “On her MySpace webpage can be found … admissions of purchasing and using marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia. Specifically. she ‘can’t wait to buy some weed!!! … I also want to get a vaporizer so I can smoke in my room.’ … [She] also posted a photograph of a marijuana cigarette and labeled it ‘what heaven looks like to me.’”

Cannabis companies pitched Epstein

Though it is unclear to everyone how Epstein actually built capital and traveled in the finance world, it does appear from countless emails that he was the kind of person who those looking for investments frequently solicited. That’s not to say these individuals or companies were involved in the sexually savage side of his business, but it’s all nonetheless relevant to paint a picture of the guy.

When it came to cannabis investments, it does not appear that Epstein was very enthusiastic. That despite friends or associates emailing him articles that showed the promise of the nascent industry, like this one from Haaretz: “Meet Israel’s Many Medical Marijuana Millionaires – Including Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak.” One published note suggests that he may have purchased some cannabis stock, but a response that could potentially shed light on the deal is inexplicably redacted.

Since Epstein seemingly primarily consorted with villains, it’s no real surprise that files related to two significant cannabis fraudsters turn up in the new pile. The relation is unclear. Other documents, however, indicate a Shark Tank-like environment, in which prospective cannabis business partners emailed Epstein their ideas. The most hilarious of which is a pitch deck for “True Blunt Masters,” a “mass appeal multimedia and branding platform encompassing film, music, merchandising and retail all focused on legally creating and commercially exploiting trademarked brands within the mainstream market.”

“This platform,” the founder wrote to Epstein in 2014, “is related to the presently developing – and soon to be exploding – legal (medical and recreational) marijuana industry.” Despite all of the exploding and exploiting that was promised, though, it does not appear that Epstein put his money behind “True Blunt Masters.”
