There’s never a dull moment in Kenyan courts

24-year old Cornelius Kiprotich pleading guilty in the Eldorat Magistrates Court, Kenya, to charges of cannabis cultivation:

ā€œYour Honour, I am not a drug peddler, I am a lover of nature. These plants were my source of peace….every time I look at them I feel a calm that no other flower can provide. I was tending to them to beautify my home and soothe my soulā€.

When asked by the Magistrate, why he didn’t grow roses instead, Kiprotich replied:

ā€œI stay away from roses because they attract Ā women. I am not ready for the drama and complications that come with women right now. I prefer solace and the scent of my cannabis. They don’t ask me for anything, they just give me peace of mindā€.

In his simple yet striking defense, Kiprotich viewed the plants as ornamental, adding beauty to his home.

He described the plants as ā€œbeautiful greeneryā€ that gave his compound a serene atmosphere.

ā€œI grow them the way others grow flowers. To me, they are art,ā€ he explained.

Senior Resident Magistrate Keynes Odhiambo and those present couldn’t hide their amusement.

Despite his spirited defense, the magistrate reminded him that the law is clear.

He read out the section of theĀ Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, which prohibits the cultivation, possession and use of cannabis.

ā€œRegardless of your intentions, the law does not permit the growing of cannabis.ā€

ā€œIt remains a prohibited plant,ā€ the magistrate told him firmly.

Pleading guilty to the charges, Kiprotich expressed his remorse stating:

ā€œI am remorseful, Your Honor. I now realize that even though the herb makes my environment beautiful, it’s against the law of the land. I regret planting an illegal beauty.ā€
