Portugal’s Judicial Police have dismantled what they describe as “one of the largest” industrial laboratories for  extracting, processing and packaging cocaine in Europe during an operation in the Oeste (West) region, arresting seven people and seizing around 1,500 kilos of drugs.

‘Operation Pacoba’, as it was called, dismantled a highly organised criminal group dedicated to bringing large quantities of cocaine into mainland Europe, the police said in a statement.

“The end result of operation ‘Pacoba’ was the arrest of seven suspects (four Portuguese citizens, two Colombians and one Moroccan), the seizure of 1,478.5 kilos of cocaine, three firearms, large amounts of cash, several light and heavy vehicles and the dismantling of the laboratory,” the police said.

The detainees, aged between 29 and 56, are to be brought before the competent court for initial questioning and the application of coercive measures.

According to the judicial police, the investigation began following an exchange of information within the framework of international cooperation and in close collaboration and coordination with Colombia’s national police, Spain’s national police and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Homeland Security Investigations and  Customs and Border Protection.

In May this year, the police’s National Anti-Drug Trafficking Unit seized 986kg of cocaine in a container from Colombia that had entered Portugal through the port of Setúbal.

According to the judicial police, the container was carrying around 20 tonnes of bananas and the drugs were hidden in the bottom of the cartons in which the fruit was packed.

“In the course of the investigation carried out by the PJ, it was possible to identify those responsible for importing the cocaine, and it was also possible to identify other suspects,” the statement adds.

As part of the investigation, a court issued twenty search warrants, both residential and non-residential, and four arrest warrants, which were executed on Tuesday.

In one of the warehouses searched, an industrial laboratory was in operation, and around 460 kilos of processed cocaine and 32.5 kilos of cocaine in the process of being processed were seized.

Three men working there were caught red-handed.

Two firearms, a press, various pieces of lab equipment, large quantities of chemicals and a large amount of cash were also seized, according to the Portuguese police.
