Coalition Urges Congress to Expand Research and Accelerate Access to Psychedelic and Other Breakthrough and Emerging Therapies for Veteran Mental Health
WHAT: On Friday, August 22, Adam Marr, director of Operations for the Veteran Mental Health Leadership Coalition (VMHLC) — a national alliance of Veterans, family members, clinicians, researchers, advocates and mission-aligned partner organizations on the front lines of the mental health and suicide crisis— will testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs at the field hearing “Separating Fact from Fiction: Exploring Alternative Therapies for Veterans’ Mental Health” in Montevallo, Alabama.
Marr, a U.S. Army combat Veteran, will highlight the limitations of status quo mental health care and the work of Veterans to expand access to psychedelic and other emerging therapies that facilitate more holistic healing than standard, frequently overprescribed medications like SSRIs. He will call on Congress and the VA to act with urgency in turning supportive words into meaningful action, with concrete recommendations from VMHLC on the path forward
- Expand Federal Investment in Breakthrough Therapies — Increase funding for psychedelic therapy research and implementation with diverse trial sites, public-private partnerships, and wraparound Veteran care.
- Accelerate Access to Life-Saving Treatments — Expand ketamine access at VA facilities, establish a “Right to Try” pathway for eligible investigational therapies, and remove “fail-first” barriers.
- Create a Federal Task Force on Emerging Therapies — Launch a VA-led task force, with Veteran stakeholders, to fast-track promising treatments including MDMA-assisted therapy, psilocybin, neuromodulation, accelerated TMS protocols such as SAINT, new single-day treatment options, and other neuro-restorative approaches.
In addition to Marr’s testimony, the hearing will also bring together VA leaders and policy experts to discuss the science and data behind alternative therapies for Veterans, as well as the real-world impact these therapies have had on the lives of Veterans and their families. It will also address common misconceptions, evaluate VA’s readiness for potential FDA approval, and examine what Congress can do to guarantee safe, equitable and informed access for Veterans.
WHO:
- Adam Marr, director of Operations, VMHLC; Combat Veteran
- Lt. Gen. Martin R. Steele, USMC (Ret.), president, VMHLC President
- Dr. Lynette Averill, Medical Researcher, Clinical Neuroscientist (Yale/Baylor); expert in PTSD, suicidality and trauma-related disorders
WHEN:
Friday, August 22, 2025
Field Hearing begins at 11:00 a.m. CT / 12:00 pm ET
WHERE:
American Village 3727 Highway 119
Montevallo, Alabama 35115
WHY IT MATTERS:
- Every year, more than 6,000 Veterans die by suicide.
- While supportive statements have been made — including from leaders in the Trump Administration — words are no longer enough. Congress must act with urgency to expand research, reduce barriers, and accelerate access to emerging therapies.
- VMHLC represents a unified national coalition of Veterans, families, clinicians, and advocates driving systemic change.
