CARTAGENA – In a coordinated international operation, Michael Francis de Haseth, a Curaçao national and member of a prominent island family, was arrested in the Colombian city of Cartagena on an Interpol red notice issued at the request of Dutch authorities. De Haseth is suspected of playing a key role in the transatlantic cocaine trade between South America and Europe.

According to Colombian police, the 41-year-old had been on the radar for some time and was taken into custody without resistance on Friday in an upscale neighborhood of Cartagena, where he had been living under an assumed identity.

The arrest forms part of Colombia’s broader strategy to combat cross-border organized crime. So far this year, authorities have arrested 111 individuals for extradition, with 50 of those arrests based on Interpol alerts.

Fugitive from Dutch Justice

De Haseth had already been convicted in the Netherlands and sentenced to 42 months in prison for multiple drug offenses but fled before serving his sentence. The Dutch FAST team—a joint unit of the Public Prosecution Service and police specialized in tracking down fugitives—traced him to Colombia earlier this year.

Key Player in Drug Smuggling Network

Colombian media describe De Haseth as a high-value target with strong ties to criminal networks operating along the Colombian Caribbean coast. Intelligence services allege he coordinated the smuggling of over 100 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Rotterdam in 2022.

Authorities say he managed the entire logistics chain—from purchasing the drugs in Colombia to their reception in Europe—while employing encrypted communications and layered smuggling tactics to avoid detection.

International Cooperation

Colombian Police Chief General William René Salamanca praised the arrest as a prime example of effective international cooperation. “Organized crime knows no borders, and international security requires joint action,” Salamanca stated.

De Haseth is currently being held in a high-security prison in Colombia while awaiting extradition to the Netherlands. His transfer will be handled by the Colombian Attorney General’s Office in coordination with the Dutch Ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs. Once extradited, he will face proceedings in court in The Hague.
