This is the kind of funding that seems to be entirely appropriate for spending cannabis tax dollars on – providing fun…
The North Elba Town Council granted the Saranac Lake Civic Center $5,000 in cannabis taxation revenues on Tuesday to establish a roller-skating program. The motion was approved at the board meeting held on Tuesday.
Councilman Rick Preston stated that the project was eligible for funding even though the Saranac Lake Civic Center does not lie in North Elba. This is because the project would benefit both North Elba as well as the village of Lake Placid. According to the funding application, the next closest roller skating rinks can be found in Queensbury and Rutland.
Marnie Crane, the facility coordinator at the civic centre, also agrees that the building on Ampersand Avenue, in the village Saranac Lake, is an important asset to North Elba, and Lake Placid. Saranac Lake is situated in two counties, Essex and Franklin, and three towns: North Elba and Harrietstown. Harrietstown is the civic center.
“The town has done a great job in supporting the civic centre because they recognize that we serve the town of North Elba multiple ways,” Crane said.
Crane said that the idea for a roller skating track was partly inspired by the Rockefeller Center which converts its ice skating rink into a skating rink during the off-season. The civic center will remove the ice in March and the skating rink will be open from April until September when the ice is replaced.
