Secretary to the Thai Minister of Industry Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen has revealed that the Thai government has a plan to “make Thailand the Hemp Industrial Hub of ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] by 2027”. Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen was speaking at the opening ceremony of the Asia International Hemp Expo & Forum (AIHEF), which took place from 27 to 30 November 2024 in Bangkok. For his part, Advisor to the Minister of Public Health Kosit Suwinijjit, who presided over the AIHEF opening ceremony, reaffirmed that the Thai government is “committed to promoting the beneficial, safe and legal use of cannabis and hemp to generate economic value and improve the quality of life of the Thai people”. During the event, the Asia International Hemp Federation was formed, which launches this year with 12 member countries.
Despite the various reports in the international press in recent months announcing the Thai government’s intention to ban cannabis in the country again, this possibility now seems very remote. Proof of this is the success of the fourth edition of the Asia International Hemp Expo & Forum (AIHEF), which featured more than 200 exhibitors from the international hemp and cannabis industry and welcomed more than 12.000 visitors. This was evident as soon as you entered the huge space that hosted the event, at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok, where you could immediately smell the unmistakable aromas of cannabis.
