The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says that cannabis is now the most widely used type of drug in Afghanistan, surpassing opium.

The office said on Sunday, February 1, in a report that the consumption of pharmaceutical narcotics also exceeded opium use in the past year.

The United Nations has said that drug consumption patterns in Afghanistan vary according to region.

The organization has specified that the consumption of “K” tablets has increased in cities.

The United Nations has emphasized that drug consumption is strongly linked to poverty and unemployment in Afghanistan.

The organization has noted that drug consumption among women is concerning and that information gaps have made it difficult to provide accurate statistics in this regard.

The report states: “Poverty, unemployment, and health problems are both factors in the inclination toward drug use and intensify dependency on them, while the financial costs of consumption impose additional pressure on families.”

Although accurate statistics on the number of people addicted to drugs do not exist, the Taliban two years ago announced this figure to be around five million people.

The Taliban have transferred people addicted to drugs to prisons.
