(FOX 9)Minnesota marijuana businesses They are on the final stretch and hope to win licenses that will allow them to open in 2019. They may have already established competition when they open.

Businesses prepare for cannabis licensing

Crested River, a successful hemp business in Morgan, Minn. is owned by Shawn Weber, who has his sights set on a next step that seems to be a natural one.

Weber said, “I don’t need to go to marijuana.” “I’d like to go to pot.”

His greenhouse is still empty as he prepares for expansion into the marijuana business. Some of his potential competitors could very soon begin growing in the nearby fields.

Tribal Cannabis Competition

Weber said, “If and when licenses are granted, we will be natural competitors.”

The Off The Path dispensary, which is soon to open on the Lower Sioux Reservation, is only a few miles away from Crested River.

The competition could be even closer.

Tribes leaving reservation?

The Governor’s Staff confirms that they are in negotiations with all tribes except one in Minnesota, to allow cannabis businesses outside reservations.

“Everyone is getting ready and saying, “Hey, can we do it when we get there? Zach Wilson, who runs Waabigwan Mashkiki – the White Earth Nation cannabis business – asked, “Are we going to get this right ?’,”?” “We’re taking the approach that we are very confident that at some point, we will get, you know some sort of off-reservation dispensary licence.”

Wilson’s operation grows marijuana, manufactures it, and sells it on Mahnomen tribal land. They expect to be subject to the same rules that other Minnesota cannabis businesses operate when they are off reservation.

They’ve already purchased an old JL Beers Burger restaurant in Moorhead, and are converting it to cannabis retail.

What is the timeline?

Wilson does not believe that they will be able to stifle competition before the state begins licensing.

Wilson said: “Really, it’s a lot synergies. There are going be a number of social equity licenses which will have growth.” “They’re going have brands. “Well, they need a place to put their product, don’t they?”

He isn’t worried about competition ruining the Mahnomen’s business, either. Partly because tribal laws allow them to sell certain items on the reservation that the State won’t permit off it.

They hope to have signed compacts with the government by the end the year.

Weber says that if everyone follows the same rules then the market will work itself out.

Next year, competitors will learn if they have enough room or if it’s possible that the market could become oversaturated like in other states.

Weber said that there was a tipping-point. “I am concerned about what some of these tribal leaders are planning to do.”

The Minnesota licensing timeline has not been set in stone, but it is expected that the first license lottery will take place late this year. Retail licenses should be issued by March.
