The crew of Coast Guard cutter Joseph Tezanos intercepted a drug smuggling ship in which they seized 176 kg of cocaine and arrested two suspected smugglers, off the coasts of Rincon, Puerto Rico on Sept. 28, 2024. (U.S. Coast Guard Photo)

Sunday, the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Joseph Tezanos unloaded 388 lbs (176 kgs), of seized cocaine, and handed over two smugglers into custody to DEA Special Agents at Mayaguez in Puerto Rico.

The interdiction was the result of multi-agency support for the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force. The cocaine seized is estimated to be worth $4.8 million dollars. The cocaine seized is estimated to be worth $4.3 million.

The apprehended smugglers were U.S. citizens who are now facing federal prosecution in Puerto Rico for criminal charges, including conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with the intent to distribute it aboard a vessel under the jurisdiction of the United States. The charges carry a sentence of up to life imprisonment. The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. attorney Helena B. Daniel, and Max Perez Bouret, Chief Transnational Organized Crime Section.

During the morning on September 28, the crew aboard a Coast Guard HC-144 Ocean Sentry detected a suspicious 22-foot Sport-craft vessel that was navigating toward Rincon, Puerto Rico. Watchstanders from Sector San Juan diverted a cutter Joseph Tezanos to the scene, where they stopped the suspect vessel. The Coast Guard crew found 142 brick-sized packages containing suspected contraband in the suspect vessel. These packages tested positive for cocaine. The two people onboard were arrested.

The commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Tezanos was Lt. Kali B. Carmine. She said, “I am very proud of my crew’s professionalism and response in disrupting organized criminal activity within U.S. waterways.” This successful interdiction and seizure highlights the collaboration and commitment by our federal, local and regional partners to counter the flow of narcotics in the Caribbean, particularly the Mona Passage.

W. Stephen Muldrow, United States Attorney, said: “I congratulated the United States Coast Guard for this successful interdiction.” “We are grateful for the U.S. Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to keeping Puerto Rico, and our nation, safe.”

“This operation highlights the incredible power of collaboration among agencies like the DEA and Coast Guard and our federal and regional partners. This unified effort allows us to effectively combat transnational criminal groups and disrupt their illegal activity. This case is an excellent example of how teamwork can be used to strengthen our ability, when we work together with a common mission, to protect citizens in Puerto Rico, the U.S. mainland, and abroad, from the scourge that is drug trafficking. These partnerships are critical, but they are also the cornerstone to our success in keeping communities safe,” said Denise Foster Special Agent in Charge of DEA Caribbean Division.

This interdiction, seizing and prosecution is part a Strike Force Initiative of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, which allows for permanent multi-agency teams to work side-byside in the same place. This co-located approach allows agents from different agencies and jurisdictions to work together on intelligence-driven multi-jurisdictional missions to disrupt and dismantle transnational criminal groups, money launderers and drug traffickers. The Caribbean Corridor Strike Force’s (CCSF) mission is to identify, disrupt and dismantle Transnational Criminal Organizations. The CCSF consists of agents and officers of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USICE), Homeland Security Investigations, United States Coast Guard Investigative Service and United States Marshals Service. The prosecution is led by the Office of the United States Attorney of the District of Puerto Rico.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Tezanos, a 154-foot fast-response cutter, is based in San Juan Puerto Rico.
