New reporting obligations for hemp in the EU

09/11/2024 | Regulation (EU 2024/2391The new law, which was passed on September 10, 2024 introduces a number of new reporting requirements for the hemp industry. EU Member States will have to report annual data about hemp prices starting October 1, 2025. These reports are due each year by October 31.

• The area planted with hemp the previous year, and an estimate of the current year’s area (in hectares).
• The production of hemp fibers in the previous years and an estimate for this year (in tonnes)
• The weighted-average ex-factory price of hemp fibers for the previous year (per tonne)

All member states that produce hemp fibers on an area greater than 1,000 hectares are subject to the new reporting obligations. This regulation aims to bring the hemp industry to the same level as other fiber crops such as flax or cotton in terms of market transparency. These changes are part a broader initiative to improve reporting requirements for the agricultural sector in order to promote data collection across the EU.
