In a major operation, officials of Spain’s Customs Surveillance Service aboard the Special Operations Vessel “Petrel”, in cooperation with the French Patrol Ship “DFP3-JF Deniau”, intercepted a boat carrying 500 kilograms of cocaine in Atlantic water, northwest of Canary Islands. Six crew members, who are all Brazilians, were arrested.

The interception was part of Operation Pascal-Lino 2024, a coordinated customs exercise between Spanish authorities and French authorities, which has been active over the last few years in different scenarios.

The investigation began when aerial surveillance units spotted a suspicious vessel that was exhibiting erratic patterns of navigation. The boat was located far away from any other fishing activity, which raised further concerns.

On Monday morning, September 23rdThe vessel was located more than 300 miles northwest of Canary Islands. Naval units were sent to verify the vessel’s identity and purpose.

The result was the seizure of 20 bales weighing an estimated 500 kilos (half-a-ton) with a street worth of EUR50 million. The crew was immediately arrested.

On Thursday (September 26,thThe ‘Petrel,’ docked at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife where the drugs were deloaded and the detainees handed over to the legal authorities. According to the Spanish Customs Agency, the Spanish National Court oversees the legal proceedings.
