The German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier signed the new law regarding fines for driving under the influence of marijuana, which was approved at the Bundesrat upper house beginning of July.

The Federal Law Gazette published the order on Monday.

The limit for the psychoactive cannabis substance, tetrahydrocannabinol, will be 3.5 nanograms/millilitre of blood – similar to 0.5 milligrams for alcohol. For novice drivers, and for those who mix alcohol with cannabis, strict rules apply.

Anyone who drives with more than 3.5 nanograms THC, whether intentionally or negligently risks a fine up to EUR500 ($552) or a driving ban of one month.

If alcohol is consumed, an additional fine of EUR 1,000 will be imposed.

As with alcohol, cannabis will be banned during the two-year probationary phase for drivers’ licences and those under 21. The 3.5-nanogram restriction does not apply. In the event of a violation, a fine up to EUR250 is usually imposed.
