Melinda Katz, Queens District attorney, announced that approximately four tons (four metric tons) of illegal cannabis products and cannabis were seized from a storage unit in Floral Park on Tuesday 17th September following the execution of the search warrant. This was done in partnership with NYPD and NYC Sheriff’s Office. During the raid, a smaller quantity of Psilocybin and crystal meth products were also discovered and seized. Two defendants were charged with criminal possession for allegedly producing and storing the illegal product.

District Attorney Katz said, “The proliferation in illegal cannabis shops in our neighborhood is supplied by large warehouse operations that are not regulated or overseen.” We are targeting these areas to prevent dangerous, unregulated, and untaxed goods from being sold in communities. My office is resolute to crack down on the illegal sale and production of recreational drugs in neighborhoods. “Thank you to our NYPD and NYC Sheriff’s Office partners for their work in this case.”

Awad Aziz and Muneer Kazsim, both from Brooklyn, were arraigned last night late on charges of criminal possess of a controlled substance of the second, fourth, and fifth degrees and two counts criminal possession of marijuana in the first degree.

Criminal Court Judge Edward Daniels has ordered defendants to appear in court on November 12th.

If convicted, each of them could face a maximum prison sentence of up 10 years.

According to the charges and investigations:

  • The NYPD, along with the NYC Sheriff’s Office and other members of the NYPD, began an investigation at the beginning August.
  • Queens District Attorney’s Office soon joined the investigation and a search was conducted at the address 88-08 Little Neck Parkway.
  • On September 17 at approximately 6:00 pm, law enforcement officials executed a warrant and found a large amount of cannabis and cannabis-related products, along with a smaller amount of crystal meth, and numerous products that were labeled Psilocybin (also known as magic mushrooms).
  • Officials also observed a separate area in which concentrated cannabis products are allegedly produced. The liquid extract is obtained by pressing the vegetative marijuana to obtain a liquid extract. This liquid extract would then be loaded into cartridges made of plastic.
  • The total amount of unregulated, illegal product was loaded onto two dump trucks weighing about four tons or 8,000 pounds.
  • Both defendants were located near the premises during the search.

The investigation was conducted with the assistance of the NYC Sheriff’s Office and members of NYPD Queens South Narcotics.

The case is being prosecuted under the supervision Assistant District Attorneys Mary Lowenburg (Bureau Chief), Catherine C. Kane (Senior Deputy Bureau Head), Jonathan Scharf (Deputy Bureau Leader), and Executive Assistant District attorney for Investigations Gerard Brave.
