SEATTLE, Sept. 3rd, 2024 – RELEASE OF PRESS – Custom Cones USAThe cannabis industry experts in pre-rollsPublished a Pre-roll white paper In partnership with Headset Compiling a comprehensive report about the state of the market for pre-rolls in 2024. Data from 2023 shows that pre-rolls generated more than $4.1 billion of sales revenue in the first half 2024 and sold 394 million units.
Custom Cones USA and cannabis industry analytics firm Headset partnered to gain comprehensive insights into current state of pre-roll market. They combined their retail point-of sale data across 12 U.S. States from January 2023 until June 2024 with Custom Cones USA B2B insights gathered from more than 300 companies, including recreational and medicinal cannabis producers, hemp processors, plant processors and vertically integrated brands.
Some of the most notable findings include:
Pre-rolls generated more than $4.1 billion of sales revenue from January 2023 through June 2024. They sold 394 million units.
- The market share of these companies also increased dramatically, from 13.2% in January 2023 up to a record 15.9% in June 2024.
- The sales revenue is similar. Monthly pre-roll revenue has steadily increased from $181.2 millions in January 2023 up to $257million in June 2024.
In 2023, pre-rolls infused with e-liquids will be the most popular category. This reflects a change in consumer preferences.
- Connoisseur/infused segment dominated charts in 2023, and the first half 2024, with sales of more than $1.75 Billion. This segment surpassed Hybrid – Single Strain Pre-Rolls, which had sales of $1.64 Billion at that time. This was due to the higher prices created by the added concentrate.
- The market share for connoisseur/infused Pre-Rolls has grown at a rapid rate. Since 2019, the segment maintains an average 34.4% of the pre-rolls category across all 12 tracked markets. This share has experienced a rapid increase in recent years, reaching 41.5% by 2023 and then climbing to 44.4% during the first half 2024. This trend indicates a growing preference among consumers for premium products (that are also expensive).
The multi-billion dollar pre-roll industry has pushed infused pre-rolls to the forefront of the cannabis market, making them the third largest category in the United States, behind only flowers and vape pens.
- Pre-rolls had the largest increase in sales revenue from June 2023 to 2024 with a 11.89% increase year-over-year. While the beverage category experienced a 10.97% increase in sales, monthly pre-roll revenue was almost 12x higher than beverage revenue in June 2024.
- Even if we look back further, the rise of pre-roll is still impressive. Since 2020, when it was only 9.8%, the pre-roll market has grown every year. The growth in sales revenue over the last five year is nothing short of amazing: pre-roll sales revenue increased from $469 million to $2.7 billion. This is a nearly sixfold increase in revenue.
Pre-roll prices have actually fallen, despite the fact that sales of premium pre-rolls are on the rise.
- The average price for a pre-roll is down 16.7% from January 2023. It went from $7.80 per unit to $6.50 in June 2024.
- The average item price may be declining, but the total number of pre-roll products sold is soaring. From 15.9 million units in January 2023, to a record-breaking 26 million in June 2024.
Price, potency and strain were the three most important factors for pre-roll businesses when it came to influencing consumer buying decisions.
- Price, potency and strain were ranked as the top three factors by pre-roll businesses. The paper type, packaging, and brand loyalty were also considered.
- The businesses are not far behind. Potency was ranked as the most important factor by consumers. When choosing pre-rolls for their customers, potency was ranked as the No.
