Thankyou to Ryan for joining the Koalas to talk about the challenges of growing cannabis on a commercial basis both in the early days of legalisation in Canada when Canopy brought him in from the US where he was working with ornamentals to get their first facilities up and running and more recently as the US market consolidates and is trying to get the best opearting structures for profit that they can.

.Ryan has worked in Canada, the US & Colombia both as a grower and consultant and brings a decade and a half experience in cannabis and 20 + years in ornamentals to the table

We talk about those early years and what he learnt and what companies need to learn now.

Like all other industries cannabis companies are making the same mistakes. Head office is getting increasingly separated from where the real action happens, the grow room and management always see solutions in tech and not people. Ryan reckons that’s a big mistake and i’d suggest he’s on the mark.

Ryan Douglas advises cannabis owners, executives, and investors on what separates high-performing cultivation businesses from expensive ones.

He brings 30 years of horticultural experience, including a decade advising cannabis operators and investors on strategy, operations, and growth.

Ryan is the author of three books, has published more than 100 articles, and hosts Under Glass, a weekly series exploring the operational realities most greenhouse businesses never talk about.

Book Blurb

Launching a cannabis cultivation facility is no different than starting any other commercially produced agricultural crop, but the excitement and potential for big profits can lead to lapses in judgment that prove devastating for many start-ups. It’s common for new cannabis companies to raise millions of dollars, only to squander it away on poor hires, confusing management structures, and outlandish cultivation strategies. In short time, these factors come together to form a perfect storm of mistakes that cause many cultivation programs to crash before they really even begin.

Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. An entrepreneur does not need to be an expert grower to launch a thriving cultivation business, and most problems can be avoided through the application of basic business principles and good management practices. By utilizing the advice, checklists, and templates found within this book, cannabis entrepreneurs will skip the typical start-up mistakes and enjoy the shortest path from seed to success.
